Do you want to know how to look like a pirate using a do-rag? Everyone has an image they conjure up in their head when you hear the word pirate. You think of long duster coats, long hair, earrings, peg legs, parrots and someone that frankly just needs a bath. But the modern-day “pirate” concept is just so different.
Act the Part
Its all about Irie
The first part of being a pirate is being irie, cool, and relaxed. Just let stuff go, life is too short to be hung up on it. Besides, when you do, it just negatively impacts you, typically the other person doesn’t even remember whatever that tiff, discussion, or thing was. It is just your hang up now that is causing you issues with zero impact on their life.
You do You
Be yourself. Whatever that means. Do you like to dress in v-neck sweaters and wear penny loafers at the country club? Want to smoke cigars and wear Hawaiian shirts? Do you like to wear boat shoes and have a ponytail? Do you like to dress to the nines? Ya like to ride your motorcycle and dress the part of a biker? Whatever it is. Go for it, be yourself and don’t apologize for it.
Life your way
It is about freedom, scoffing at the norms and living your life according to your own rules (obviously within the confines of society’s laws). Deb and I consider ourselves pirates from that respect. We are respectful of others but don’t apologize for our lifestyle and approach to it. We don’t care too much if you don’t approve, it is not for you, it is for us. In the same regard, we won’t scoff at your way of living.
C’mon man it isn’t the 18th Century
The one place we depart from the pirate lifestyle of old is in the lawless nature of it. While pirates in the days of the tall ships had an odd sense of loyalty and order, they were lawless. They were takers and not givers. To that end, being a pirate is NOT about breaking the law. Quite the contrary, it is living your way within the confines of the law. And let us face it, we have a lot of liberties to do that in a way that is more than fulfilling and you can do it wearing a do-rag
Dress the Part
The pirate clothes
Look you can go crazy, you can literally dress like Captain Jack Sparrow if you are so inclined. I think you may get a few crazy looks, but what the heck like I said above, you do you. The modern Pirate these days is more of a combination of Jimmy Buffet meets Hawaiian beach bum I think. Below are a few of my favorite pirate things to wear .
The Do-Rag
First and foremost is the Do-Rag or DuRag. I am a huge fan of this accessory and really enjoy wearing them. There are a lot of reasons, but a few of my favorites are:
- Sun Protection. They keep my head shaded in the sun and with the right style, you can wear them in a way that covers the back of your neck.
- They are a great way to keep cool. I often dip mine in the water and put it back on when in the sun for long periods of time
- They convey cool messages with their colors and patterns
- They can be worn in many different ways
Someone had asked me if I could share where I get all the do-rags (Do-Rag, Durags, buffs, bandanas, headwear). What the heck do they even call these darn things? LOL. I got my first one as an accessory with a polisher for the boat or something like that. I loved the way it fit, but when I went to buy one at a marine supply store, they were $20-$30 each.

Look like a Pirate
I went on a bit of a search for cool patterns at a better price. The ones I use are not as good as the $30 jobbers but are fairly close to as good. The best news is they are about $2 per piece and I buy them in themed color packs. Below are a couple of Amazon links (I am not affiliated with this company but have bought all of these and liked them). Each of the links below allows you to select through several different themes (Flags, skulls, flames, dark, colorful, etc)
(If you use these links I get a tiny stipend from Amazon, Thank you)
