The sounds of Nature
I am clearly having a rather reflective morning and listening to the sounds of nature. Part of how I start my mornings allow me to do so. I enjoy getting up before the sun peeks over the horizon, getting my coffee, and relaxing on the dock before the craziness of the day and work thoughts creep into (or takeover) my thoughts. As the sun peeks up a bit higher, the homes across the water begin to light in that warm glow of the morning golden hour.
Setting the Morning Scene
To help set the scene, I am typically sitting back in an Adirondack chair with my coffee on the arm of it. I notice the need to revarnish these chairs again, but the thought quickly escapes me as I lift my coffee cup from the well worn wooden arm of the chair.
The sounds of Water
I listen to the repeated sound of mullet landing harshly back in the water after jumping. When one is getting a good run, you can hear the soft splash when it launches from the water, and the loud slap sound when their body lands horizontally 5-8 feet from where came out of the water. On a good day, I will hear a proper chain of 3 to 4 jumps right in a row as he makes his way along the water.
The sounds of the sky
When I listen closely and not focus on just the sounds of the immediate area, I next notice the birds. The loud ones are the crows. Their distinct and frankly annoying cackle is one of the loudest in the area. But being still and listening, I can hear the calling of distant owls. ‘Who, who, whoooo.’ It is faint and not close by but very distinctive. It always seems to be in successions of three calls. I hear light chirping from some kind of small birds and even the cooing of a few dove.
Down the canal, I hear the sound of water hitting water and notice that a boat up on a lift has water coming out the side. No doubt a boat bilge pump just went off after the good rain we had last night.
The peaceful sights and sound continue as I write this by typing it into my phone, sitting on the dock. A large coconut that has fallen off a tree slowly bobs by in the gentle morning tide. I get out of the chair to take a quick picture of it and notice how the reflection of the palm trees ripples in the water’s surface.Â
The Sounds of Life
I notice schools of minnows in the water, and as I go back toward my chair on the dock, I see an average-sized Sheepshead swimming just below the surface of the water. Rarely can you capture these brief moments on camera, but this guy seemed to know I was sharing my morning routine and decided to cooperate for all of you.
Great way to start the morning
This always puts me at peace in the morning and is a great way to start the day. My head is clear, and I am ready to start the day from a place of peace rather than anxiety. Not to mention the trash truck just broke the lovely silence with the sound of the motor revving, stopping and the sound of those rolling plastic trash cans dumping overhead. He must still be a few streets away, but it certainly breaks the peace and serenity of the sounds of nature I was enjoying.Â
All in all this is a great way to start the day and kick it off right.
