In this weeks episode, we go full blown “How To.” This is all about how to make repairs to solid wooden items such as Booms, Masts, and Bulkheads. In our case, we found a small section of our wooden mizzen boom that had a soft spot on it.
In this video, we will show how to determine if a repair is needed. How to remove the bad / rotted material. How to cut a template before using expensive wood. How to purchase exotic hardwood from a specialty hardwood store. How to cut the hardwood and make the correct angles for a scarf joint. How to install the new piece of wood with epoxy. How to mix sawdust in epoxy for color matching. How to sand and shape the final material.
Learn how to repair your own boom, mast or bulkhead. These are skills that can be used to fix almost any good hardwood project including furniture. If you have searched in boat repair forums, seek now further, I may have run across some of the repairs you need to do. I am not an expert, but have gained quite a bit of knowledge in refitting my own boats as well as the curiosity to research the best way (for me) to go about making my own repairs that save money but remain strong and long lasting.
