Where is Steel Pier
Steel Pier is located in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was the primary attraction of the South Jersey Shore for its early history. Over time the Casino’s have become the attraction with the legalization of Gambling there.
Amusement Park
The amusement park portion of Steel Pier is what you would typically expect. It is something above the quality of a traveling circus set of rids, but not quite the significant Amusement park quality either. It certainly leans more toward the big guys than the rickety stuff brought in on trailer to your local shopping mall around the country.
What is on Steel Pier
As you walk into the entrance from the boardwalk to the amusement portion, you pass the big overhead signs announcing you have arrived at Steel Pier. Nestled just down from the Tropicana Casino, it is a nice walk and a fun time for the family.
The Midway
There are midway games of chance, such as ring toss, ball throwing, and water squirting games. The carnival barkers make their announcements letting passerby’s know just how easy it is to win their game. From Basketball to guessing your weight to dart throws, it is all there.
The Rides
The big attraction at Steel Pier is the Ferris wheel. It is large and enclosed, so riders are protected from the weather. There are a rollercoaster, swings, bouncing rides, dropping rides and a host of others.
The Ferris Wheel
I took the time to spin around on the Ferris wheel, and if you watch the video below in this post, you can come along for the sights of the New Jersey shoreline.
The Diving Horses of Steel Pier
Back in the 1920s, this pier used to have an attraction of a horse that would dive into a tank of water. Looking at the pictures, It was terrific, and as soon as you see them, you are amazed, and then you feel bad for the animals. They did not jump from the pier into the ocean, but rather into a pool on the dock. A few decades ago, a developer was attempting to bring the attraction back. As you can imagine that was met with HARSH criticism and failed to ever get off the ground.
What to Know if you come to Steel Pier
One of the things that surprises me a bit as I spent some time here was that there are parts of the city that are relatively dumpy. Had I been there at night alone, I may have held tighter to my wallet. It just looked a bit sad on this gray skyed day. That said there are also some gems there as well including the casinos, good food, and the Steel Pier.
